Today, two Kungfu masters brought Chinese Martial Arts to Avon High School in an activity called "Introduction to Chinese Martial Arts". Most of the students taking the Chinese program participated in this cultural event together with some teachers and students who are interested in Kungfu. Wushu (武术, martial arts) masters Shuaishuai Sun and Richard Gordon from Ju Long Wushu Center in South Winsor demonstrated 八极拳(Bājíquán, Eight Extremities Fist)and 蛇拳(shéquán,snake fist), followed by a gesture-by-gesture teaching of a section of the Eight Extremities Fist routine. After that, Master Sun, who is a visiting coach from Beijing, taught the students some practical techniques of self-defense, which could come in handy when being attacked.
The learners were mesmerized by the charm of Chinese martial arts. As one of the teachers participating this event noted in an email to AHS public: "it was the epitome of inclusion and all students/abilities were able to fully participate. A wonderful time had by all!"
Master Gordon concluded this event with a wonderful performance of a routine of 棍术(gùnshù, or staff)before they left AHS and headed to The Gilbert School for in Winsted another teaching session.
